Excelsior Jones, Ashfield
Early on a Friday morning Excelsior Jones was churning out strong-smelling takeaway coffees to suited locals massed around the open kitchen.
But in the simply furnished dining area we had our pick of the tables. A waiter helpfully found us a high chair and a place for the pram. We drank our flat whites ($3.50 each) and read the menu in the warmth of the sun coming through the large windows overlooking the street.
Excelsior Jones’s breakfast menu runs from traditional favourites like egg and bacon sandwiches ($10) to the more exotic sour cherry raisin toast ($5) or smashed minted peas with Meredith goats curd and poached eggs ($13). Some of the breakfast items are also on the lunch menu (from 12pm) so you won’t miss out if you like a late breakfast.
Hungry, we chose from the more substantial dishes on the menu.
The eggs benedict were downplayed although the hollandaise and bacon were tasty. A large bowl of house smoked salmon hash with fried buckwheat, eschalots, poached egg and fresh herbs ($16) was bursting with flavour.
A great cafe for some lucky locals. Also worth stopping by for morning or afternoon tea if you’re in the area – lemon cream sponges, brownies, madeleines and a range of milkshakes (cherry ripe, butterscotch, lime & coconut, jaffa, vanilla all $6.50).
